CARLSBAD, California, September 12, 2007 – Six martial artists from the United Studios of Self Defense in Carlsbad
had the privilege of receiving training from the Shaolin Warrior Monks from China last month. This once-in-a-lifetime experience
to be taught by the incredible Shaolin Monks is one that many kung-fu enthusiasts only dream of.
Nathan
Botts, David Cipolla, Kristen Colwell, Jesus Gonzales, Matthew Haines, and Christina Oddone each learned a Shaolin form; a
set of choreographed kung-fu movements that help the student develop various skills such as balance, coordination, flexibility,
and fighting technique. The Shaolin Monks practice these very forms to hone their awesome martial arts ability. David, Kristen,
Jesus, and Matthew also had the honor of testing for their next rank with the Shaolin Monks.
The
next day, everyone was invited to watch the Shaolin Monks perform in a spectacular show that included amazing displays of
strength, flexibility, and form. Instructor Kristen Colwell said that “watching and learning from the Shaolin Monks
is one of the most inspirational experiences a martial artist can have.” The testing experience was
also significant as Matthew Haines describes, “testing with the Shaolin Monks was exciting and I will never forget it.”
