- Your Role as a Student
How the Program Works
The
style we teach is Shaolin Chuan Fa, also known as Shaolin Kempo. Our style is over 2,000 years old and comes from China. Students learn to use both their hands and feet to defend themselves.
Students can also learn to use Martial Arts weapons once they have reached an advanced level.
There are two elements to
our program:
Personal Lesson
You will receive one Personal Lesson with your Instructor every week. In your Lesson, they will focus on learning
material required for promotion to your next rank and/or receive help in areas they may find difficult. In this way, you are
constantly learning and processing new material.
Group Class
Our studio offers up to three Group Classes every week. You will
meet and work with other students of similar ability and rank. During the group class, you will receive an excellent physical
workout and will also have the opportunity to practice your new material with other students. Click here for our group class schedule.

at your rank and all your material has been learned, you are eligible for promotion to the next rank. Don't forget that
it is not appropriate to ask about your next test date. Your Instructor will tell you when you are ready to test for the next
rank.
Your Role as a Student
Here are some important tips that will help you get the most
out of our Martial Arts Education Program:
- Make sure you attend class regularly. Consistent
training is key to learning the material required to advance in rank and developing strong Martial Arts skills. If a you are
going to miss a class for any reason, call our studio so your instructor can establish alternative arrangements.
- Apply the
five principles: Effort, Etiquette, Sincerity, Self-Control and Character.
- Practice your material
outside of the dojo in addition to your private lessons and group classes. You will progress quickly if your private
lessons are spent on refining current techniques and learning new ones. It is impossible to remember all of your material
and execute it well in your private lessons without having practiced at home.
- Review your USSD Student Manual and DVD
to internalize the five basic principles, five animals, history of Shaolin Kempo, methods for meditation, optimal nutrition,
and descriptions of stances, blocks, strikes, defensive maneuvers, Katas and Pinans. (Remember that this manual is a tool
for you, but does not replace the instruction you receive in your private lessons. It is not appropriate to teach yourself
techniques that you have not been shown by your Instructor.)
- If you learn a technique that is not listed in
the USSD Student Manual, write it down in a notebook or on the blank pages in the back of your student manual.
- Memorize
and practice the fifteen rules of dojo etiquette.
- Support your dojo by applying yourself in class, being a positive role model for other students,
attending and helping with dojo events, ordering your Martial Arts equipment from your Sensei and helping the dojo in whatever
way you can. Remember that we are like a family - we all look out for each other and by doing so, help each of us achieve
our goals.
